Well, today is Force Friday, which means at participating retailers, new Star Wars merchandise officially went on sale. It’s a very exciting time for Star Wars fans. I actually hadn’t heard of this event until yesterday morning, when my friend Michelle sent me a thousand links, each one making me more excited than the last. I started skyping Jeff, and asked him if he’d be down to go. He was like, “I don’t know…” so I sent him this video of the BB-8 toy, and he was like, “yes, ok.”
Luckily for us, there was a Target about 15 minutes away participating in the midnight release. When we walked in, we were instantly greeted by this 48″ wookie plushie that they were raffling off:
This later becomes important to my personal story….
Anyways, we get shooed to the back of target where the electronics/toys are, and are told to get in line. We arrived about 45 minutes early, so the line really wasn’t too bad. I think we were probably 30 people back. There were actually a couple of girls next to us dressed as Jedi, and that set the tone for what would be an amazing night.
While we were waiting, I tried to take discreet photos of merchandise to send to Michelle. I felt so damn cool.
That’s probably the clearest image I have. All of them were SUPER zoomed in. So stealthy.
The line did seem to pick up though. It wrapped behind us quite a ways the closer we got to midnight. Once midnight hit, the line did start to move. They had the merchandise in two different locations, which I thought was a nice way to split the crowd a little. We got our little stamp and raffle ticket, and went on our merry little ways.
There were so many cool things! Even being in the first quarter of the line though, it was tough getting some of the items. I literally grabbed the last Funko available. Actually, ok. There were 3 on the shelf when I walked up to it. A C-3PO with a red arm, Poe Damaron and Rey. Having not seen the movie, I didn’t know which one to grab, so I hesitated. I picked up the C-3PO, but I have one with normal arms at home, so I put it down. Then I stared for a second, and before I realized it, the ONLY one left was Rey. So, quick decision… I GRABBED HER. And I’m really happy I did. Rey does seem pretty damn cool from the trailer, so she is now sitting happily on our nerd shelf. Also the Pop toys ended up being quite popular, so I was basically the coolest kid in the store, nbd.
As you can see from the loot pile above, we also got our grimy little geek hands on a C-3PO hot wheels car, which is now sitting on my desk, the R2-D2 talking plush, which I’ll have you know, was ALSO the last one on the shelf *self high-five*. We also got the BB-8 droid. The remote controlled one, not the one you can control with your phone. It’s still REALLY cool though.
Oh! Jeff also bought this really cool shirt. He’s rocking it today, and I might be biased, but he looks AMAZING in it. Mmmmmmm.
As we were wrapping up our humble little pile and doing one last run through the aisles, Target announced that they were going to announce the raffle winner. I did not win that raffle. HOWEVER, after they announced the winner, they told us to stick around for another 15 minutes, and they would *surprise* be raffling off one more.
So, we picked up our stuff, and figured it would take us at least 15 minutes to check out, so no big deal. As we were waiting in the big old check out line, sure enough, the raffle winner was announced, and BOOM! I won! I know, you probably didn’t even see that coming.
I heard a chorus of groans and then a very clear shriek that most definitely came out of my mouth. I threw ALL of my toys on Jeff’s arm and a Target employee escorted me to the toy section where I would wait for my prize. I might have danced, and people might have cheered for me. That wasn’t even a fever dream, that happened, and it was AMAZING.
Turns out winning a 48″ Chewbacca TALKING plush in a sea of Star Wars fans, pretty much makes you a celebrity for 5 whole minutes. The Target employee brought out a cart that I’m pretty sure could fit an entire refrigerator. I started laughing, and just said, “You can’t be serious. Is that really the Wookie?”
As it turns out, it was. So many people taking photos and gathering around. Target took my photo with the toy and asked if it was ok that they post it online, to which I said, “duh.” Then I did my glorious march through the store, carrying a wookie that was as tall as I was. I was met with a sea of “Congratulations” and camera flashes. I WAS A QUEEN. A STAR WARS QUEEN, and THIS WAS MY KINGDOM.
Ok, that was really dramatic, but it did feel really awesome. And now I have a people-sized Chewbacca to scare my dog with XD
Well, that was my night! Anyone else get to check out Force Friday? I’d love to hear your stories!
Also, a special thank you to Jeff, who ended up buying all my crap after I threw it at him to get my Wookie. I love you boo!
