First things first. HAPPY 2015! I’m SUPER pumped about this year. Mostly because last year was LAME. I think this sums 2014 up pretty well (stolen from trollxchromosomes). However, 2015 brings lots of potential happiness and opportunity! I am going to embrace it with open arms.
With the new year, I wanted to start a new series where I talk about what I am currently reading. I hope that this will open up some fun conversations about some of the new and already existing content out there! What a better place to start than with the new(ish) Batgirl.
Now, with this series, I’m coming in slightly late to the game. ACTUALLY, let me back up. I’m coming in VERY LATE to comics in general. I will openly admit that I am a fan of comic universes based off of their movies and TV shows. I am far from a purist, I know. Please still like me. With that said, I am surrounded by so many passionate comic book fans. In fact, I’ve been dating one for quite some time. I’ve always wanted to get into comics, but I think I was really overwhelmed with how to begin. So this past weekend, my boyfriend and I were looking for something to do, and we decided to go to our local comic book shop, Samurai Comics, to see if there was anything that caught my interest.
While browsing the walls of the comic book shop, I stumbled upon issue #37 of the new Batgirl. I had found something that caught my interest. If gold and glitter doesn’t do it for me, then nothing else will. My boyfriend decided to buy me my first comics ever as late Christmas gifts. Issues #35, #36 and of course #37. I was nervous about starting so far out from issue #1, but he told me it would be fine.
Starting from #35, I was instantly in love with the cast of characters. There was so much diversity represented, the art looked great, and the medium was really easy to follow. I really don’t have a lot of background with the original Batgirl (see confession above), so I am reviewing these comics as a brand new reader.
